The quick and easy guide to learning a language...
As an Australian born citizen, I started learning German at the start of high school and contrary to what some may believe learning a second language is hard... However, if you put your mind to it, you may be amazed by the results...
1. IMMERSION:
-An exchange/holiday- in the country that speaks the language will definitely help you, even just hearing others speak and stringing sentences together will improve your language out of sight.
-Podcasts/Radio- This is better for those who have a basic understanding of the language, it will help you with sentence structure and pronunciation
2. DIARY/JOURNAL:
-Every time you learn a new word, record it in a tiny note book that will fit in your handbag or pocket, that way you can flip through it at convenient times e.g. when you are waiting for a bus...
3. CONVENIENCE/DISCIPLINE:
-If learning a language is a heavy burden you are more likely to find excuses not to do it, make learning a language fun. Put music in your language on your Ipod, get a penpal, add a person that lives in France, Germany etc on Myspace and talk to them through that...
4: BE CONFIDENT! KEEP ON TRYING!
-When you first start attempting to speak your language with others, they will probably laugh at you, but the more you try the better you get!
MOST IMPORTANTLY!
-If applicable when learning a new word in your language learn the gender of that word, for example: in German the word for Book is Buch, however, just learning that word is of little help unless you know that it is: das Buch...
-Learn grammar as you go, grammar is the foundations of any language, yet, it is probably the hardest part to learn. Make sure you learn it, even if you learn it gradually, also make sure you constantly review it, so you don't forget!
BEST OF LUCK!
