The effects of smoking on leisure, the public and the economy.
The Restaurant Industry plays a very important role in international hospitality business. Restaurants operate under the umbrella of International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA) which is a global business organisation that represents the interests of hospitality industry worldwide. It is officially recognized by the United Nations, IH&RA monitors and lobbies all international agencies on behalf of this industry. There is an estimation of 8 million restaurants around the world. This industry contributes billions of dollars into the global economy.
There is a membership of over 11,500 group and independent restaurants and as part of the British Hospitality Association. The Association is there to protect the interests of its members and helps to advocate its ideas to the government and provide the necessary information and professional advice to its members. The industries employ over 500,000 employees and make approximately 21bn annually.
The IH&RA's mandate is to monitor and advocating for the interests of tourism industry that includes restaurants. Smoking has been lately identified as one of the problems being faced by the restaurants operators among other issues, such as food security, worker migration, terrorism and health problems like obesity. Smoking in restaurants has become one of the latest hot issues being currently debated in various jurisdictions and laws being implemented to regulate and ban smoking in public places that includes restaurants all over the world.
The international community is worried about the devastating global, health, social economic and environmental results of the direct and indirect consumption of tobacco. The consequences will further put the burden to families, on the poor and national health systems. Many families' all over the world are loosing their breadwinners and beloved ones due to tobacco smoking. Health departments are spending huge amounts of money of funds in treating and caring for people suffering from smoking effects.
Smoking has been known to cause cancer as far as 1950s and associated with more than 50 different diseases and disorders. It is responsible for 14,000 people per year in Britain. Therefore there are enough grounds to ban smoking in public places such as restaurants.
In 2003 the World Health Organization came up with a Framework Conversion on Tobacco control to reinforce the increasing trend to restrict smoking
