Apple's iPhone will revolutionize mobile computing and mobile technology but not for the reasons one may think. While the iPhone is an amazing piece of technology and a huge advance in phone beauty and design, it is not so much what the iPhone can do , rather it is what the iPhone will do to the cell phone design industry now and in the future.

For too long cell phone users have put up with sub-par phones that continued to come with more and more features that failed to live up to expectations. Low quality phones, cheesy games, horrible web browsing, a huge lack of 3rd party software, and strict control of the U.S. handset market all had to be tolerated because there was no alternative. Then the Motorola RAZR came out and suddenly other phone providers scrambled to either get the phone available for their plans or have their contracted makers pump out a sleek, amazing phone. The RAZR was perhaps the first new phone to really kick development and design departments really into gear because quite literally Motorala was leaving the other companies in the dust.

What does the RAZR have to do with the iPhone? Well the iPhone has completely blown away the once revolutionary RAZR and once again companies are scrambling to catch up and make better phones. The difference now though is that the iPhone is made by Apple, the genius company behind the wildly popular iPods and a company that has developed a near cult-like following. And of course whatever Apple does, other companies will rush to try to mimic because as in the past, Apple products usually live up to their hype.

So the Apple iPhone will revolutionize mobile computing by forcing phone company providers and phone manufacturers to get off their laurels and begin creating newer and better phones. Without the iPhone, we may have had to wait years before someone decided mediocre phones were not something us consumers deserved. The spirit of competition (or being completely blown out of the water by a product like the iPhone) is only part of the revolution Apple has begun. Bottom lines and staying in business are also good motivators as other phone makers frantically try to play catch up.
