Each day we embark on a run, we're bound to meet up with new challenges, struggles, or surprises... Most of the time, these events are only casual obstacles to our daily successes of completing a workout or casual jaunt, and we usually stare them down and surpass them. However, there are several cases when these obstacles are so bold that it would be crazy for us not to acknowledge their ferocity. Whether you are a veteran or beginning runner, it is OK to be prepared take it down a notch under the following circumstances. And trust me...no one will think any less of you as the dedicated warrior that you are!
EXTREME TEMPERATURES:
Intense heat and cold can wreak havoc on your body-don't dismiss your body's natural reaction to these environmental changes! Do so and you can risk hypothermia or heat stroke. However, if you must run on incredibly hot or cold days, here are some things you can do to ensure that you remain healthy and safe...
Heat
1. You should take a familiar, shady, short route, and you should let at least one other person know where you are going.
2. Drop cold bottles of water in shaded areas along your route, so you can make several planned stops to drink and cool off during your run.
3. Wet your hair down before you go out, or wear a hat that's soaked with water.
4. Wear light, nonrestrictive clothing that is breathable.
5. Run at an easy, conversational pace...do NOT attempt an intense workout or run!
6. If you can, run with someone else. If not, try to run where there are homes and people.
Cold
1. Again, make sure you choose a short, safe route and that at least one other person knows where you are going.
2. Try to wear clothing that keeps you warm while wicking away any moisture. The Under armor clothing line is specifically suited to that purpose.
3. Wear a ski mask to protect your face from frigid temperatures and cold winds.
4. Flexible gloves are best for keeping your hands and fingers warm.
5. Get shoes with good traction to prevent slipping on slushy spots.
6. Avoid routes where you will encounter large snow drifts or slippery ice patches.
7. If conditions make it difficult for drivers to see you, wait until the weather clears up before you consider running.
8. Be sure to wear bright clothing that motorists can easily see in case the weather suddenly turns ugly while you are out.
