I believe that a third-party candidate will become president of the United States by 2016 or sooner. More people are registering as independents. Less people are satisfied with the Democratic and Republican parties. More young people are registering as independents. Due to the heightened dissatisfaction with the Congress, more people in the future will look to alternative, third-party candidates or parties for political guidance. The party elites and some in the news media will fight this tooth and nail but I envision a strong, grassroots rebellion in the heartland of America and elsewhere that will make this dream of mine a reality.
I believe that there are many people like me that vote regularly. I'm 43 years old and I've voted in every presidential election since my first in 1984. I voted for Mondale in 1984 and Dukakis in 1988. I voted for Perot in 1992 and 1996, Buchanan in 2000 and Petroutka of the Constitution Party in 2004. Why? Because the Democratic and Republican nominees support global free trade and open immigration. They don't adhere to strict constitutional principles and aren't agents of reform only the status quo.
A third-party candidate or party can win the presidency if that candidate or party has strong, grassroots support. This candidate must be wealthy or receive a lot of money from average, ordinary people who believe in his or her message. The message must be one of economic populism and nationalism. A candidate who believes in enforcing the borders, wants us to win in trade not just be competitive and opposes us policing the entire world militarily. Although he is running for the Republican presidential nomination, Ron Paul is the candidate that I want as president. Maybe he will be that third-party candidate if he doesn't get the Republican presidential nomination.
