Should Cell Phones be banned in Restaurants?

I entered my favorite restaurant and was seated with menu in hand and the latest recommendations from the chef's kitchen. I was ready to order an appetizer . I was preparing for a lovely evening with my wife. As I looked around to the table to the right, I knew instantly trouble was about to begin.
The cell phone had just come boldly out of his pocket and I just hoped he would be discreet. Unfortunately, the guy had to show with his bellowing voice at least ten surrounding tables of patrons how important he thought he was. This went on for a good ten minutes.

His language , manner and loud tone were all designed to solicit attention like the last adolescent in a large family begging for parental preference.
The problem with cell phones in restaurants is the cell phone owners misuse of the technology through poor etiquette, and rude , boorish behavior. It is this self centered , "the world revolves around me" attitude that infuriates people out for a quiet meal, walk, subway ride or even in the movie theater.
The rude cell phone user is loud, indiscreet, has a high degree of self importance, and behaves this way on every call. After you get through one call, you are often subject to several others , all handled by the user in the same loud, frustrating manner.
What makes them think that their cell phone conversations are of the slightest interest to anyone else? Can we not even eat a meal without this type of distraction?
Late last year and throughout this year, cell phone use in restaurants has become a topic of conversation. Many restaurants especially in New York have begun to ban them from their dining areas. A recent ABC poll found nearly 60% of people surveyed had been bothered by bad cell phone behavior and nearly half supported banning them in dining areas of restaurants. Both these numbers have shown dramatic increases from earlier polls.
Restaurants have rules against pets and smoking. Many require a certain attire or jacket. They know that great food is only part of the dining experience for their business. They know that atmosphere is very important as well.
Restaurants should ban the cell phone in the dining area to create the proper atmosphere for everyone to enjoy their meal before many unfortunate patrons are forced to order earplugs with their appetizers.
