Drink recipes: Zombie

by Tracie Parker

Created on: July 05, 2007

A Zombie is a strong cocktail made primarily of various types of rum. It is usually served on the rocks in a highball glass and garnished with a cherry. Some people also choose to light it on fire, which is possible because it includes 151 proof rum.

The Zombie was invented by Don Beach, and got its name because its high rum content made people feel like zombies afterwards. It debuted at the 1939 Worlds Fair, and quickly became a popular favorite. Because of its name, it makes the perfect Halloween cocktail.

1/4 oz lemon juice
1 oz dark rum
3/4 oz orange juice
1/2 oz cherry brandy
1/2 oz light rum
1/2 oz high (151)-proof dark rum
2 dashes grenadine

Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into a highball glass with crushed ice.
