Millions of people suffer from depression. Some have chronic depression that may need long-term treatment, while others have occasional bouts of sadness and fatigue. The best way to deal with depression is to recognize the symptoms and get help, but unfortunately this can be difficult. How does one know the difference between depression and severe sadness or grief? Does sadness as a result of a traumatic incident qualify as depression? When is it necessary to seek help? Because depression deals with emotions and thoughts rather than physical symptoms, it can be hard to spot, but if not taken seriously it can lead to suicide or self harm. Here are some warning signs of depression that can help in getting the right treatment before it is too late.
Depression is not only emotional, but can sometimes provoke physical symptoms as well. Major changes in appetite and sleep behaviors are very serious signs that something is wrong. Many depressed people eat much less than normal, while a few eat more. Depression can also cause insomnia, resulting in less or more restless sleep. It can also cause oversleeping, as a person may feel too tired and unmotivated to even get out of bed. Children and the elderly will most likely articulate depression by describing physical symptoms, so these can be vey important in diagnosing depression.
Depressed people may also see changes in their energy level. Some experience bursts of energy and irritability, which can lead to rash decisions. They may fidget when seated too long or pace to combat restlessness. More commonly though, a depressed person will feel fatigued and withdraw from physical activities. They may also suffer from loss of memory or have difficulty thinking and concentrating.
Probably the most notable symptoms of depression are emotional. A depressed person may feel worthless and blame themselves for things that are out of their control. Small matters may seem suddenly important. Criticism or advice may feel like all out hatred, while praise and achievement are ignored. They may feel ugly, dumb, sad, and deficient, or cry frequently. These are symptoms that can lead to suicide, so these need to be monitored carefully.
Rarely, a person suffering from depression will show psychotic symptoms. These are the most noticeable, including delusions, hallucinations, and thoughts of death. If a you or a person you know are experiencing any of these, seek immediate medical attention.
If you are not sure about whether you or someone you know is depressed, see if you identify with one or more of these symptoms. If you do, the best advice is to contact your doctor and discuss what you are feeling. Even if it isn't depression, your doctor can probably help you figure out what it is and what needs to be done. Depression can be caused by the death of a loved one or traumatic incident, so even if you think that depressed feelings are justified, be careful and see a doctor if the feelings persist. If the symptoms are spotted early and the proper diagnosis and treatment are given, a depressed person can gain back their motivation to live and quality of life.
