Tips for saving money when traveling in Europe

Paris is one of the most glorious destinations in the world to visit. But it's also one of the more expensive cities in which to spend your vacation.

However, by taking a few simple steps, you can maximize your fun while minimizing your costs.

1) Take a hotel closer to the outskirts of Paris. Paris proper consists of the 20 arrondissements bounded by the circular highway known as the "Peripherique." While hotels close to places like Notre Dame, the Left Bank, and the Champs Elysee may be more romantic, they can put quite a dent in your budget. Because Paris is criss-crossed by one of the best subway systems in the world, it pays to move a little farther out; after all, on a European trip, a hotel is only a place to crash at night. As an example, the Ibis Paris Tour Eiffel Cambronne is located at Place Cambronne, technically within the 15th arrondissement, but in a typically Paris neighbourhood and only a 20 minute walk from the Eiffel Tower. It's a modern hotel located just a few steps away from a subway stop and, with rates under 80 Euro per night (at this writing), you can't beat the price. You'll find yourself rubbing elbows with European businessmen during the week, and French families coming into the "big city" on the weekends.

2) Rent an apartment. If you're staying in Paris for a week or more, consider renting an apartment. A google search will turn up any number of companies offering Paris apartments for rent at rates that will be far lower than most hotels. Not only do you have the convenience of your own "pad" with a kitchen available, but you'll really be part of the local neighbourhood! You'll be out every morning for your "cafe and croissant," and don't be surprised if the cafe owner starts greeting your arrival each day. When checking out apartments for rent on the internet, make sure to seek out references (every apartment owner proud of his/her accommodation will post guest comments) and double-check their reputation with a google search. Check several on-line travel forums for reviews or comments.

3) Purchase a Paris Museum Pass. Paris is, if nothing else, a city of museums and monuments; the Louvre, the Musee D'Orsay, the Arc de Triomphe. If you plan to visit many of these showcases during your stay, your best bet is to purchase a Paris Museum Pass in either the 2, 4, or 6 day version. If you visit at least two of the sites per day, you're saving money. Even more important, having the pass allows you to bypass the long lineups at the ticket
