How to get started in Webcomics

and search engines will be more likely to find your comic. At least one comic has the text in alt elements instead of using normal bubbles.

You should have an index page with a brief description of your comic, some representative artwork, possibly warnings about content, a warning if any special software is required (and links to download it), links to main parts of the site (including most recent page and first page). Many people put the latest page of the comic on the index page, this isn't a good idea if you have objectionable content or special software is required to view it.

The other things you should have are:

Archive (so readers can find old comics)
Gallery (of fan art or artwork that wasn't part of the actual comic)
Forums (you can link to free hosting)
Blog (you can link to free hosting)

Once you've created all the necessary files, you just upload them to your hosting company's server in the normal way (remember to set permissions correctly for any CGI scripts etc.). Your hosting company will tell you how to do this.

PROMOTION

There's little point in doing all this if nobody sees it. Remember to have meta tags on your web pages with appropriate keywords and descriptions. Remember to have title elements on your pages! You can submit your site to search engines like a normal web site. There are also special sites that list web comics (Online Comics, Buzz Comics, Top Web Comics etc.) and you should submit your comic to them. You can also put your site on web rings and there are some banner exchanges for web comics. You may be able to get links from other sites dealing with related subjects (e.g. if your comic deals sympathetically with a real religious group or disability etc.). If you like, you can pay to advertise you comic in various places.

You can also attract more readers by getting involved with comic crossovers and doing guest comics and fan art for other comics.

WAYS TO MAKE MONEY

You probably want to make some money with your comic so, while you're waiting for the letter from Hollywood, here are some suggestions.

Adverts (there are various services which will pay you have advertisements on your site).

Take donations through a PayPal account.

Sell merchandise: print versions of comic, artwork, dolls etc..
