God's ways are mysterious. The Bible even tells us this is so. With all of the examples laid out for us in the Bible, we still tend to forget that what we can imagine as a workable solution to any given problem, is only a drop in the bucket of what He can imagine. When we reach the end of our own searching and strength, God begins to work.
Long ago, my five-year-old son taught me something about "how God works" and about trusting Him. I was a single Mom with four children, always trying to stretch a six-inch dollar to six and a half inches. Money was hard to come by, but the bills came in as regularly as the sun rose. I was very good at pinching pennies, but no matter how hard I pinched or worked, we were always just getting by. Though we didn't have a lot, we never went to bed hungry and we always had a clean bed to sleep in. We had each other for fun and for comfort. We went to church, and I tried to teach my children how to use what we learned, in everyday life. But, sometimes it was I who forgot. Years of having every turn left to me had made me think I could do anything if I set my mind to it.
One month I was out of work sick for four days and the short paycheck hurt. I had racked my brain for a solution and shaved my budget until it was raw, but there was no money to pay the electric bill. The next day was the "cut off" day. I had to tell the children. Jamie refused to see a problem. He would not even allow the thought that God would not help us. I ask him what he expected to happen and he said,
"I don't know Momma but maybe it will come in the mail." I smiled at him and said that it might. I had no heart to trample on the faith of this precious little child. I went to bed with a heavy heart and finally fell into a fitful sleep.
Early the next morning Jamie wanted to know what time the mailman would run. I told him and smiled a sad smile as he eagerly watched the clock, asking every five minutes if it was time yet. I was busy filling a cooler with ice and rounding up candles and making some extra biscuits. At the appointed time, he ran down the drive to wait for the mail. A few minutes later, he came in and handing me several envelopes said, "Here Momma, one of these is the money for the electric bill". I said thank you and went to my room. I noticed that one was from the phone company and my heart fell even lower. Surely, I had paid that. I opened it and to my surprise, there was a check for seventy-five dollars. I was in total disbelief. I had had phone
