Buying Used Cars

What you need to know before you buy a used 4x4 vehicle

When purchasing a used four wheel drive vehicle there are several important factors you must consider. They range from the planned use of the four wheel drive, how much you have budgeted for the vehicle, and the understanding of the added costs of maintaining a four wheel drive. These factors are arguably the most important factors to consider when purchasing a good, but used four wheel drive. For the point of this article, we will assume that you have budgeted enough to purchase any used four wheel drive on the market place.

The first and perhaps the absolutely most important question that you must answer is: What is the intended use of the four wheel drive? The answer to this question can rule out many different types of four wheel drive vehicles. Such as if it is for recreational off-roading purposes. In this case you probably would not want to lean towards a newer model. You probably won't mind some dents and scratches as there will come more with off-roading. You may choose to go with an older style with lock-out hubs. For inclemate weather conditions for family use then you would probably either want to invest in a newer model SUV with good on the go electronic four wheel drive. Even here there are choices to be made as more and more sedans, station wagons, and mini-vans are coming out in all wheel drive. Some offering computerized monitoring of each wheel for slippage, reducing or increasing torque to each wheel as necessary for optimal traction. For work purposes be it construction or farming you would probably lean to a truck, or even a heavy duty truck.

With the first question answered you need to understand that there are reasons that four wheel drives are more expensive then the average vehicle. With extra moving parts comes more chances for something to go wrong. Always follow your owners manual on the vehicle when engaging four wheel drive. Always error on the side of caution. It is wise to routinely follow procedures for the up-keep of the four wheel drive. A good tip to follow is ask around to find out who is a good four wheel drive mechanic and get a relationship going with them. Have them do the maintenance work and keep your four wheel drive in tip top shape.

As with all vehicles that are purchased it is wise to take the vehicle to a trained mechanic. They will know exactly what to look for as far as wear and tear of a four wheel drive. They will be able to help keep you from being blind sides by extra costs from someone not taking care of their vehicle properly. Also ask them to test the drive train to make sure that it will properly engage into four high or four low when the time is needed. A mechanic can save you a lot of time and money.

Consider these few things while purchasing a used four wheel drive and you will more likely enjoy your time with it. Be safe on the roads and for that matter off of them too.
