Portable applications: How to work on more than one computer and keep your data mobile

If you have not seen the advances in Microsoft Office 2007 Groove then you must demo this superb tool. Primarily I keep all of my own documents in sync between my laptop and desktop, everything from IE Favorites to my MBA School files. As an added bonus, I can invite any other Groove user to my 'Workspaces' and share the files with them in real time.

As a technology consultant, my team and I keep each of our customer projects in a separate workspace that contains pertinent files, notes, calendar entries and even a discussion thread. We all access the content whenever we need, sometimes even updating the same document and the application is savvy enough to eliminate or at the very least reduce conflicts to a minimum.

As a home computer user I share photos with family and friends by creating a 'Workspace', inviting them to it and uploading up to 2 Gigabytes per Workspace of photos and other files. Meanwhile, we can have discussions within the same workspace to chat about our vacations or other photo events.

The next generation of this product is expected to develop even further, taking the on-line collaboration experience to a level beyond most computer users imagination. Download a trial version from Microsoft (Just search for Groove) and take it for a test drive. Perhaps later I will share with you how this product integrates with another gem called Sharepoint.
