Tips for presenting a business idea to investors

As an entrepreneur, there will come a time when for one reason or another, whether it's a meeting with a bank manager or venture capitalist, you will have to make an impact. Impressions (rightly or wrongly) are made within the first few seconds of an encounter, so you need to ensure you make the right one.

Creating an impact is about knowing your environment and knowing yourself. What you wear, what you say, how you stand will all assist in the type of impact you have on others. Natural-confidence is about being at ease with yourself and who you are.

There is no need to be false when trying to create an impression, this will show through and only make you and others around you uncomfortable. It's better to concentrate on improving yourself, rather than being something you are not. There are numerous self help books available, which will aid in confidence building. Key to confidence is to believe you have a purpose and what you say matters. Use your confidence along with your professional etiquette and you will find people listen and warm to you. Once you've created a good impression, you'll find it relatively easy to maintain.

Make sure you're comfortable in your clothes; if you have bought a new suit, try and wear it before the meeting so you don't feel uncomfortable when wearing it. Take this approach with shoes as well! Remember that what you wear also creates an impression. Don't wear clothing that is too tight, or too scruffy, or that could be perceived as wacky! Smart dress is always preferably, as well as good grooming and cleanliness. Always wear clean clothes and ensure you remember to use deodorant - not go over board with the perfume or aftershave. These may seem obvious, but if you let any area lapse, it won't be forgotten by those you interact with.

Always allow plenty of time before any meeting and make a trial-run before the day of the meeting, so you are clear on the route. You should arrive 15 minutes before any meeting, don't arrive too early or too late. If you do find yourself running late, do not panic, simply call and let the necessary people know.

Remember, at the end of the day this is about individuals meeting and holding a discussion. Try and enjoy the experience and remember what you have to say is interesting and of value.
