Tips for family summer fun

by Bob Schmidt

Created on: July 04, 2007

Family summer fun is the source for many fond memories as I reflect on my personal life. The hot sun of summer, combined with the Gulf of Mexico within driving distance inspired many all-day outings to the beach where every family member had something fun to do.

My parents enjoyed surf fishing while my teenage sister was interested in "boy watching". My brother and I loved challenging the incoming waves as they occasionally knocked us over. Our little sister contentedly built her sand castles at the water's edge, occasionally lamenting that the rising tide had destroyed her masterpiece.

As we enjoyed the sand, the water, and the sounds of the crashing surf; everyone anticipated the inevitable spread of food that would soon calm our gnawing hunger. Home made chicken, and ham salad sandwiches would soon be set out, accompanied by hot dogs to be roasted over an open fire.

Indulging my memories, which constitute my tips for family summer fun, I can almost taste the roasted marshmallows that served as dessert. However, the best part personally was the ice-cold watermelon that topped it all off. Of our family of six, plus friends who sometimes accompanied us, everyone had a blast!

My tip of the year for this summer's family fun is to do something that every family member will enjoy. That's what family is all about. My family's memories of our beach trips will never be forgotten. We relaxed together, played, laughed, and ate like pigs. Those were magical moments, mother nature provided the backdrop for a perfect way to have a good time.

Not everyone has access to the beach, but the location of recreation could be anywhere that your imagination can take you. It could even be the local park. Any picnic area where the opportunity to play exists, and then enjoy good food would serve the same purpose. If a beach is available, that would be my personal preference.

Don't wait any longer to create your family tradition, whatever it may be. Plan something fun for the entire family now, time's wasting. One morning you will wake up, and realize that the children have grown up, and everyone is scattered. Make sure that they all have their memories of summer family fun. That's how family traditions get started!
