Nurses, by their very nature are generally selfless and giving people who ask nothing in return. Their pleasure and the best gift they can receive, is derived from seeing you, as the patient, returned to good health as swiftly and painlessly as possible. They will never ask for gifts. However, it is only right that we should show our appreciation and praise for the work that they do, especially when their efforts have helped us, or our loved ones, through a difficult and often traumatic time.
But how does one show appreciation for the nurses that have cared and ministered to you in a gift? In my opinion, because they are so selfless, the best gift that you can bestow on a nurse is something that is personal, a keepsake or memory that will always be there to remind them of how much they are appreciated and treasured. Whilst the gift of flowers and chocolates are nice and will be warmly welcomed, they only last a short while. Yet, for a similar price you can give something that lasts for longer. It does not need to be expensive. All it needs to show is that, like their care for you, you have shown that you have thought about them.
If, during you time spent in the company of a nurse, you have built a good relationship with them, then it is quite likely that they will have spoken about things that they like. For example, they may be collecting a certain type of ornaments, which they want, on display in their homes. It could be figurines or crystals or unusual objects that appeal and give them pleasure. Alternatively, they might be collectors of cosmetic jewellery and accessories. The gifts you select within these areas will always serve as a reminder to them of the time you spent together.
The essence of a gift for nurses is to pick one that is relevant to that person. It should be chosen not only because of the fact that she or he attended to your needs, but also because of whom they are as individuals. These small acts of thoughtfulness will not only uplift you, but also the individual nurse, their family and the future patients they care for.
Finally, one of the most important gifts that you can give to the nurse that cared for you will cost nothing at all. As you say goodbye give them a smile and your heartfelt thanks for all their efforts on your behalf.
