What good does it do to pamper a glutton? Children whose primary activities include snacking and playing X-Box or Playstation all evening should be fully aware of what they are doing to their bodies. Providing children with an accurate report of their body is a good way to impress upon them the benefits of treating themselves well from an early age.

This does not mean students compare notes. In many schools regular progress reports are sent home to be verified and signed by the parent. Perhaps the index scorecard could be privately attached to that.

Another idea would be to insert BMI index education into the already present health courses. Students in high school are taught nutrition to a point, this would go hand in hand with that, or could be incorporated in the curriculum for physical education classes.

From the standpoint of a parent, I would not want my child to go through life being coddled into obesity. I have an obligation to raise a healthy, morally sound child who will carry my legacy into the future. This means I have to instill upon my child that the choices they make, from judgment calls to what kind of dinner he/she will have, all matter in the course they'll take in the future.

If we are going to allow ourselves to ignore any facet of a healthy, wholesome upbringing, then we've failed before we began.
