Experts say that it is no use taking up measures to improve the eyesight after the age of five. What a counsel of despair!
It is true that nearsightedness in particular seems to be a hard condition to affect. However, this cannot be for any physical reason. It may well be that the eyeball of a fifty year old is slightly less resilient than that of a five-year-old, but, if you were to poke around a cadaver or two, you would find that eyeballs in general are pretty soft things, no matter what their age. Most advocates of natural vision improvement agree, that with nearsightedness, especially, the condition may be caused and is certainly exacerbated by psychological stress and tension.
This being the case, the prognosis is disappointing for the success of natural vision improvement measures we might take up, for instance, the famous eye exercises pioneered by Doctor Bates. Before embarking on any plan like this it is worth sitting down and honestly working out whether we really want to improve our nearsightedness. It helps to make a list of what we are gaining from our nearsighted condition. Gaining? Yes. There are lots of benefits.
We nearsighted people have worked hard to get into the state we are in. We cultivated those bad reading habits and became nearsighted because nearsightedness is a boon. So many of the ugly things in life pass by in a pleasant blur. When required to do challenging things like get up on stage and address a crowd, it's a big help if you can't see the audience. I am nearsighted and most of the time I don't wear glasses, so, as you'd expect, I am often not quite able to make out what is going on. On the other hand, my nearsighted friend, Charlie does wear his glasses, but, even with them on, he seems to be bumbling about in a fug. That's the nearsighted personality, a trenchant thing. It takes more than a pair of specs to beat it.
If after all this, you still want to go ahead and try to improve your nearsightedness, bear in mind that Doctor Bates has identified the cause of nearsightedness as a strain to see at the far point. Therefore you should be doing all you can to relax the eyes and reduce that strain. Swinging is a wonderful way to relax and invigorate your eyes, particularly if done to music. Shift your weight from side to side, turning gently as you do so and observing the objects that pass by as you swing. Do not try to hold on to anything that you see. Let it go. Move on to the next interesting object. Practise swinging often and you will see a corresponding improvement in your nearsightedness.
