As with any law violation, and living in a country where we supposedly follow a tenet of "Innocent until proven guilty," it makes sense to prosecute those who break gun laws. Plain and simple, if you make a bad choice, expect to suffer the consequences for your actions.

Owning a firearm is not a bad choice. Purchasing a firearm and committing crimes with it is a bad choice, and should be punished. As our second amendment rights give us the privilege of bearing arms in an organized militia, and at current any registered individual who has not been convicted of a felony may purchase a firearm, should we not then allow folk to own such items as long as they abide by the law?

Another point to consider would be intent. It has often been said that guns don't kill people, people kill people. I believe that the next step in firearms control in America will be psychological screening. If a person intends to purchase a firearm under criminal intent, a screening would see through this, or deter a person from purchasing a firearm. It is not safe for every individual in every community to own a gun, as there is a level of maturity and a standard of morals which must be lived within as a gun owner.

In short, of course law-breakers should be punished. It is unjust and unfair to pre-emptively punish those citizens who have the privilege of owning deadly weapons who take that privilege with the gravity it deserves.
