Surely, if we hope for a better future we must challenge the minds of tomorrow- today. Yet, American school systems remain adequate at best. U.S. classrooms lack a vital component and as a result, students struggle nationwide. Competition, in itself, is an invaluable teaching tool. Those enriched by competition are soon enlightened by achievement. Competing allows students to realize their full potential and inspires them to then exceed those limitations. Yet, we remain reluctant to integrate it into earlier phases of education.

Competition produces articulate and thoughtful individuals. Students become actively involved in the learning process. They prepare for class. They put more effort into their assignments and take more pride in their work. Such exertion promotes information retention rates, improving overall testing scores and raising grades. Furthermore, group discussions help students develop their public speaking abilities. Vocabularies expand exponentially. They are much better readers and writers. They communicate charismatically.

Since the English language dictates so, many experts believe that competition is an antonym of friendship. Countless shun competitive educational practices because of this. After all, interpersonal abilities are excellent attributes and we want our children to enjoy camaraderie. However, rivalry often fosters extremely productive relationships. Students formulate individual opinions and defend them with insight and passion. Open dialogue and vigorous conversation allows students to identify peers with similar interests and ideas. They learn to work together and benefit from one another.

The competitive group dynamic is truly indispensable. It allows students to experiment with the nature of competition in a safe environment. Also, enthusiastic participation enables the proper assessment of individual needs. Plus, it makes school more interesting. Perhaps if students were more enticed by classroom activities there would be a decline in learning disabilities. Then, classes cover a larger amount of material in a shorter amount of time. Students become more knowledgeable. They become better decision makers. They strive towards perfection.

As students age and are faced with new challenges, their competitive edge will arm them with the means necessary to excel. For instance, students face keen competition in college. Clubs and organizations are highly selective. Scholarships, internships and simple general admissions are all highly sought prizes. Then, the work force presents a whole new series of competitions as candidates rival for openings, opportunities, and compensation. The ability or inability to handle the stress of the workload directly affects the life of every income-earning individual.

Students who adopt a competitive nature will be able to adapt to life's many transitions with amiable ease. Competition spurs creativity. As imaginative students learn, they also develop a variety of critical skills to complement evolving confidence, self-esteem, and innovation. When embracing competition, students will challenge themselves as well as each other, with grace and competence. Academically competitive atmospheres will ensure that the next generation is prosperous and proficient.
