Common myths about thyroid diseases

Is thyroid disease an old person's disease? This myth may have come about because elderly people are more at risk than the younger population. However, many women are at risk of thyroid disease during and after pregnancy. Those with autoimmune diseases have a higher risk and, in fact, anyone at any age can develop thyroid disease. Even some newborns are born with congenital thyroid problems.

Another myth, that is gaining in popularity, is that thyroid problems can be cured with miracle foods. It's true that healthy foods enhance the wellness of people, but there is no hard evidence available to prove that any food can "cure" thyroid disease.

"You don't need to follow a special diet if you have hypothyroidism as long as you take thyroid hormone replacement as directed by your doctor. Many Web sites promote hypothyroidism diets that supposedly increase thyroid function by adding or eliminating certain foods. But there is no evidence that these hypothyroidism diets work. The important thing to remember about hypothyroidism and diet is that certain foods, supplements and medications can impair absorption of synthetic thyroid hormone."
Todd Nippoldt, M.D.; endocrinologist for Mayo Clinic.

I have lumps on my throat or neck. I must have thyroid cancer. Only about 5% of nodules are cancerous growths. Of the %5 growths that are cancerous, less than 1% are diagnosed as malignant cancer.

If my mother has thyroid cancer, will I get it from her? It's not contagious but certain genetic factors can put family members at risk. If it runs in your family, thyroid testing is recommended.

You usually can lose weight with hypothyroidism. Once the normone replacement is started, and the thyroid production becomes balanced, energy levels and metabolism return to near normal.

Some thryoid conditions are temporary. The only way to know is to get tested.
