Tattoos: Purposes

by Memo

Created on: July 03, 2007

From the dawn of time we have been marking ourselves. Whether it's to memorialize a lost loved one or a skull on the forearm. Tattoos are in essence our way of displaying who we are to others in society. I've tattooed professionally for over 15yrs and have seen and done just about anything imaginable. Some tattoos are place in personal locations for the tattooed it's a private intimate thing to be shared only with those who they allow to see the tattoo. Others place tattoos where the world will see it. No matter the placement each tattoo has a purpose. Most don't understand the reasons tattoos look good or bad. Form, fit, and function are rules that have been followed by the best tattoo artists since the first tattoo.

Taking all the glitz and glamour out of modern tattooing and we see that not much has changed since tattoos were first done by man. The bottom line is that we mark ourselves to show others we meet where we associate ourselves in society, and our tattoos reflect our experiences, and our ability to withstand such a painful process. This all works out to strengths and it's shown in tattoos people have gotten and will continue to get. Men get tattoos that are dark and usually show their quest for honor and glory, but all that aside it's our primal instinct to war that makes men tattoo in such a fashion. Admittedly one should think about whatever they are permanently putting into their skin, but without a thought most men get similar tattoos depending on the level of society they associate with. Usually the tattoos will define muscle structures making man look more menacing and subcontiously warn anyone that would want to war with him. Women on the other hand even though more and more are getting tattooed heavily have a totally different primal need in tattooing. This need is for making themselves appear to man as a more attractive mate. Bright colors, and softer imagery accentuating the female form is very attractive to most. I've even gotten clients who have a husband that is not tattooed but attracted to the heavily tattooed female form. They dispay to the man that they are strong enough to handle anything a woman needs to. The female body can be tattooed and with shading and proper placement an artist can easily add or subtract ten pounds to any body part. Again on should put thought into what tattoos they get as they are permanent, but when done properly females can look very attractive to any man. These are the simplest purposes I know of as to
