Have FUN with your writing and research! It is exciting to start a new project knowing that research will uncover a myriad of new, intriguing facts. The Internet has greatly simplified research. Just turn on the computer and a world of information awaits!
Once you have narrowed down your topic you must start to find facts. I find it helpful, once I have a few interesting facts, to create my topic sentence. The first sentence must have flair and strength to ensure the topic is clearly presented.
I find it helpful to use Google and also do searches on news sites. Helpful sites include: Reuters.com, The-Times.co.UK, Washingtonpost.com, NYTimes.com, Newslink.org, and Newswatch.org. General research sites include: AJ.com, NYPL.org, Quoteland.com, and Ask.com.
If you need facts about historical events you may want to ask at Elderwisdomcircle.org, a site where volunteers over age 60 answer questions.
For specific topics I like the following sites:
Art: Frick.org, Momo.org, Museumspot.com., Guild.com.
African American issues: TBWT.com, Netnoir.com, Blackvoices.com, Blackwriters.org.
Creative Writing: Zuzu.com, Helium.com, Delphi.com, WGA.org, Pen.org.
Fashion: Vogue.com, Finy.com.
Finance: Fool.com, Nasdaq.com, Techstock.com, Companysleuth.com.
Gardening: Wildflower.org, NWF.org/habitats.
Hispanic Issues: Latino.web, Mercado.com, Quepasa.com, Starmedia.com.
Literature: Bibliomania.com, Gutenberg.net, Literatureplace.com, Litline.org, Poetshouse.org.
Medicine: Nih.gov, AMA-Assn.org, Medlineplus.gov.
Teen issues: Helping.APA.org, Teenadviceonline.org.
United States: Firstgov.com, UShistory.org, EllisIsland.org, Americanparknetwork.com, RoadsideAmerica.com.
Volunteeri ng: PeaceCorps.gov, Volunteermatch.com, Pointsoflight.org.
Women's Studies: Ivillage.com, Women.com, Oxygen.com, Fearlessvoices.com.
World Issues: Nato.int, HRW.org, AmnestyUSA.org, Oneworld.org, Refugeecamp.org.
Once you have found sufficient facts I find using note cards helpful. The cards may be shuffled to organize the project and help one finalize the outline.
Good research ensures strong writing. Facts are essential because the reader always wants to feel they learned something new when reading.
