I think this my be one of my favorite debates, because you can't really be on the 'wrong' side. I mean, in terms of beauty, rarely is one answer right for everyone. And in this particular case, both sides may be the right thing to do at different stages in your life.
My story is such that I must, at this point in my life, opt for going gray naturally. As a child I was mostly ash brown, but as I entered young adulthood I started darkening my hair. I liked the feeling of dark, exotic, mystery I got from sporting long, dark hair and long black eyeliner.
As I got older, and the silver began showing up, it became a game of making sure my roots were colored and not coming in in black and white. Dark hair with sudden white roots sprinkled through wasn't doing it for me. I decided to go blond. First I streaked in the blond highlights. I liked that well enough, but since I was doing it myself, the new streaks didn't always match the old streaks. After ending up with what I could only describe as a 'patchwork' job, I went totally blond. Platinum.
I kept that blond going for about 10 years and really did like it. The light hair seemed to suit my face. After a while, however, I noticed that it was becoming a game again to catch the roots and color them before they grew out too far. That black and white root system up against the blond would look truly hideous. I started to remind myself of tri-color corn. Not a good thing.
In disgust, I just kept putting off doing something, and putting it off, until one day I noticed my hair had completely grown out. I had mostly dark hair near my nape and back of my head, while most of the top had a silver streak running though it. I now had dark brown hair with silver highlights that looked as if I'd spent a fortune to have done professionally! I loved it.
Well, that silver streak has grown wider and more integrated with the rest of my hair, but it still maintains a bit of a highlighted look. So, for the last few years now, for me, going gray naturally is the thing to do. I've had a few people tell me I'm way too young to have gray hair. I think they're crazy! I love my hair. Dark brown, shot with silver, and au naturale....
It's been said that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and this is most certainly true for hair color. What makes you feel great? What makes you feel confident and beautiful? What makes YOU happy? That's the thing to do!
