Out of the copious amounts of vacuums I own, many friends have often asked me what the best compact cylinder/canister vacuum there is on the market. Thanks to so many features however it is hard to pick the best from the worst. Previously I had recommended Sebo's K series simply because they are very compact, powerful and made with the best quality PVC and fittings I've ever experienced. However whilst I have owned Sebo's for a good too many years, Miele in the UK have always been for most consumers, the number one choice for bagged cylinder vacuums because of their ease of use, professional design and general quality.

The model which I am reviewing here is Miele's recent budget range S4210 which now sits at the bottom rung of Miele cylinder vacuums. That however doesn't necessarily mean this little Miele is without feature, and against my Sebo K1, my parents have grown accustomed to the fact that the Miele is a lot quieter than my Sebo, even though these two vacuums from two different German companies are both known for having the quietest motors on the market.

Unlike mass produced offerings from companies such as Hoover, Electrolux, Eureka and other companies, Miele and Sebo both have very thoughtful features such as strong and robust telescopic tubing and handles which can be removed from the tubes and hoses to enable owners to fully de-clog anything which gets stuck. But this is just the start of useful and handy little design details the Miele has.

* Design *

The Miele S4210 is an excellent all round compact vacuum cleaner, suitable for anyone looking for a compact and powerful vacuum cleaner which won't pollute the atmosphere. For a start, the Miele takes electrostatic high filtration bags which are material fabric in nature against paper bags and with each box available from Miele, a Super Clean micro filter comes with the bags to enable owners to replace old filters once five bags have been used. The filtration here is rather standard against HEPA/High Efficiency Particulate Air/Arresting type filters although a HEPA carbon and HEPA Active filter are optional extras which Miele also sell and can be installed in the S4000 at extra cost; the HEPA filters can withstand 20 bags before the filters have to be replaced or until the filter allows odours to come back into the room. I rather like the fact that a filter comes free with each box of bags but this will be nothing new in the eyes of an Electrolux/Eureka/Sanitaire owner who may be used to such advantages
