If you are planning a family vacation, by all means let the children help in the planning. That is not to say, let them do the planning. Their interests, and sense of participation should be included. Otherwise, plan a trip for yourself, and leave the family home.
The concept of vacationing is not lost on children. Their anticipation of taking an exciting trip should not be ignored, because they are part of the family. An individual conversation with each child should give you a good idea of what would constitute a fun time by their definition. Incorporating their ideas of fun into your ultimate vacation plans should not be too difficult.
Often, our idea of a dream trip may be the antithesis of a dream trip for anyone else. The trick, if there is one, is to incorporate something special into the trip for each family member. To try to do it any other way hints of being a tyrant, dictating everything from only your perspective.
The dynamics of family relationship, and communication should include a free flowing of ideas, and thoughts. Younger children that are made to feel as if they are unimportant to the family often turn out to be rebellious teenagers to whom the family is not important. Self esteem is created by inclusion in decision making. A child who feels that they are important to their parents is usually a child who does not question his own worth.
Knowing the likes, and dislikes of your child is far more important than the destination of your next vacation. The intrinsic value of family closeness outweighs any point on a map. Enjoy your children, and let them help you remember your childhood dreams. That's what a vacation should be, at least in this writer's opinion. Now, go have some fun!
