The word "obsessed" is the rub, in this case.
Yes, yes, we all like the media, and we all are big fans of television shows that feature our favorite celebrities and our favorite artists.
The word obsession, though, implies that somehow we have an unhealthy fascination with our media; that the artist has usurped the art. I don't feel this is the case.
There are the people out there that are more dedicated to American Idol than the actual contestants, who live vicariously through some celebrities in a way that is indeed unhealthy and obsessive. However, these people are few and far between when compared with the far more frequent trend of people taking an idle fascination in celebrity life and culture.
The media itself is certainly not a problem when it's well done, and we're still seeing good movies and music get an ample amount of play, even if they're beaten out on the charts and at the box office by lukewarm substitutes. Art is the breath of society, and we're living in a time where good art is rewarded and supported.
It would be silly to contest that Americans (indeed, all world citizens) have the capacity to act unhealthily, letting entertainment invade aspects of their lives where it isn't wanted, but the simple fact is that these cases remain the exception and not the rule.
