set the fence on the saw to inch from the blade, and pass your featherboards through, cutting just until you reach the line you have marked. This forms the first tooth on each board. Be careful to stop on the line marked accurately. Sand any waste wood.
Spacing the feathers approximately 3/8th of an inch apart, continue to saw slots parallel with the first saw cut until you have a uniform pattern of cuts across the board, always stopping on the guideline drawn.
Sand and remove all waste wood.
An extra.
Now that you have your featherboards, drill a large hole in the end of the featherboard away from the feathers and this can be used to hang up the board in between uses. Mark the featherboard with the longer spokes so that you know that this is the featherboard to be used with softwood.
TO USE THE FINISHED FEATHERBOARD.
The featherboard is fixed to the saw bench with a clamp, with the comb-like edge facing and parallel with the blade at the desired distance away from the blade. Try and dry run and push wood against the featherboard and what happens is that it easily passes through, though do remember that when working with small items in a table saw, your fingers are in danger of being cut, and always use a push rod which can be made from thick dowel.
