Thierry Henry joining Barcelona is certainly the major transfer coup of the season. I would liken it to Eric Cantona's transfer from Leeds United to Manchester United. A player with his caliber joining a team like Barcelona shouldn't be surprising to any
football fan around the world. But what surprises me is the size of the transfer fee and the way the deal is struck.
Henry has been on any major European club's transfer list, with many of them not even having the guts to mention as they fear they would be ridiculed linking a player like Henry to their club. Also, I think the reason he had been in Arsenal all this while is not because of his love for the club but other teams not being able to come up with enough to even make a bid. And with Barcelona paying just 16 million for him, it would be worth every penny as it is even cheaper than the players that Manchester United bought that has lots of potential but are unproven in international stage like Nani and Anderson. I wonder what Arsenal or Arsene Wenger was doing as Real Madrid almost bid 60 million for him a few years ago.
The transfer deal had also been struck so smoothly which is unusual as a player with his caliber should at least attract a few bids from other clubs. Also, Arsenal seem very willing to let go of their prized possession, club captain and one of the two players left in the club, the other being Cesc Fabregas. With the Spanish La Liga having trouble to contain Samuel Eto'o all season, I doubt they will be able to contain Henry, let alone both of them.
Once again I would like to congratulate Barcelona on this deal and as for Arsenal, I hope you will be able to hold on to your other player.
