YouTube.com is, what some are saying, the entertainment replacement for television and visual media. Containing not hours but days of video, YouTube has become a one source stop for the latest gossip, funniest videos, cultural insights, and even scientific experiments or popular news stories.
YouTube has not only created a superior selection of content but an extremely interested audience. YouTube is constantly updating and users don't have to wait for commercials to watch. On top of this, because of the ability to embed YouTube videos on other websites, users can share videos with their friends on sites such as myspace.com, friendster.com, or mytubevid.net.
Users of youtube.com have taken blogging to a whole new dimension... video blogs. Some users post weekly videos just talking about politics or showing themselves doing something strange. It appears to be fascinating people, since many video bloggers have hundreds of thousands of subscribers who return for each new post. People all over the world are abandoning their televisions and joining the network.
Other websites such as mytubevid.net have taken advantage of YouTube as well, searching for only the best videos and categorizing them for faster searching. This partnership between youtube.com and other websites (providing content and receiving traffic in return) has multiplied its popularity even more.
Other sites have sprung up, such as Revver.com, that have managed to capture some of the attention of youtube (mainly video bloggers) by incorporating advertisements at the end of each video, where half the profit goes to the video's owner. This is attractive because it gives the blogger a way to make a profit while retaining an audience they wouldn't receive if they hosted the video themselves. The problem is getting everyone else who doesn't care about money to leave youtube to go watch videos elsewhere.
It would seem that YouTube dominates by default. It's got the network, the content, and now that Google owns it, the video streaming is faster than ever. Even as a Webmaster I enjoy searching for videos. It's not really a job for me but a hobby.
