Growing Christmas cactus

by Madison

The Christmas Cactus is said to often live for 100 years! I have had mine for about 5 years and its mass of deep green leaves are getting more stunning by the year. I first decided I must get a Christmas Cactus when I saw a huge plant blooming in the window of an apartment in Chinatown in San Francisco. It had red flowers (a color the Chinese consider to be good luck) and was very dramatic.

My Christmas Cactus has pink flowers. I like the contrast of the rugged leaves with the pretty pink of the flowers. The plant requires very little care. I water it about once a week and have it on a plant stand where it gets indirect light. I had it in the window for a while but the leaves were getting washed out looking; now it is thriving in indirect light.

It is easy to create gift plants. Just snip off a piece of the cactus and stick it in a small pot of plant and typically it will grow quite well. Most people love any kind of plant that flowers, so it makes a great gift.
