I recently saw a network news story that discussed this issues in the terms of our busing system. When minority integration was ordered in the late 1960's, they started with American schools. Busing minority children from their neighborhoods to affluent neighborhoods across each American city.
The same was done to children in affluent neighborhoods, including myself-I was bussed across town for the purpose of integration. Today, we see this experiment, and that's exactly what it was, has failed. Now children in the poorer neighborhoods in America are demanding that they attend their schools in their neighborhood.
In each major American city including Manhattan, New York the examples of this government failure are very evident. Kids from Queens, Harlem, and other parts of the burrows are bussed to the city, miles away from home and placed in an environment that is nothing but a culture shock.
In my opinion, this problem could be solved very quickly. Stop waisting our tax payers dollars on the busing system. It doesn't work and most children want to go to school in the neighborhoods they live in. Second, school district must hold all teachers no matter what schools they teach in accountable for the progress of their students. The issues of race and inequality would not exist in a system where teachers and administrators are held accountable. Let our children go to school in the communities they live in, stop the forces busing and the needless burden it has placed on all Americans.
