Packing for Europe: A Woman's Perspective
One of the principal questions a woman asks when she is about to board a plane across the Atlantic is, "What to pack?" Bell-Hop is at your service. I have searched the web for this sort of information and all I found were the bare minimum lists where you are washing your clothes out every other night in the hotel sink. I know I don't want to do that, and let's face it, you don't either. You're on vacation for Pete's sake!
I am a typical woman. I like my shoes and my hand bags, my hair products and my makeup. So, if I am able to go on a two week summer holiday with only a 45" carry-on with wheels and a shoulder bag you can too and you will thank me later!
Having traveled frequently in the past year, I am intimately acquainted with the needs and wants of the female traveler. I am also all too familiar with the expectations of a trip and its reality. It seems we always have the trip that is in our head and the trip that actually plays out. Leave your expectations at home with your laptop. It will be much easier to enjoy yourself if you can go with the flow unencumbered with mindsets.
Small carry-on style luggage is easier to handle on and off trains, planes and buses-especially if you are traveling to several different cities. So, unless you have an entourage that is responsible for carrying all your big bags, remember less is more. This will also eliminate any worries about the airline losing checked baggage. (Incidentally, even as I am writing this I received an email from a friend who flew to London and you guessed it-they lost her luggage.)
We tend to bring more than we need. Returning from Italy a couple weeks ago, I discovered two shirts I never wore and my traveling companion had six shirts she never donned.
Here's the skinny:
Northern countries, such as England, Ireland, Germany and France, are most likely going to be in the 70s in the summer. Jackets and rain gear are essential. Layering, as usual, is best. More southern countries like Italy and Spain will be warmer and in some places down right hot. Sunscreen and hats are essential.
Here's what I suggest for a two week summer holiday:
Cash
I would exchange your dollars at your local bank before you leave. Contrary to what you may have heard, airports do not offer competitive currency exchange rates. A friend changed in 40 dollars in a Milan airport and got 17 Euro in return-ouch! ATMs are everywhere and another good option.
Shoulder bag
disinfectant wipes for when hand
