An End to the Crying
If I could make one scientific discovery in my lifetime, it would be the cure for HIV/AIDS. The most painful thing to see in this world is the pain in a mother's eyes when she has to leave her child because of AIDS. AIDS devastated humanity, left infants without parents, and parents without their children. Many millions of people around the world are living with HIV. Thousands of people die every day, and many among them are children under 15. Since the discovery of the virus, millions of people have died. Even though we know how to prevent the spread of HIV, there are thousands newly infected each day. For many years, scientists have tried to discover the drug for the HIV virus. Fortunately, they discovered several classes of drugs that could kill HIV to undetectable levels. Unfortunately, these drugs are expensive in some areas, especially in developing countries, such as Africa, where there are not enough hospitals, doctors and medication to treat those who suffer from this disease. Many become sick because they are unable to get treatment from the hospitals in their hometowns. Also, the most frightening thing is, about half of the population is living with HIV. With this many people infected, the lack of education and resources still continues. It is a disaster for the world.
If nothing else, I would like to help bring more resources, such as medication and doctors, to areas that currently do not have them. Seeing the number of people that live long lives with AIDS in the U.S. made me realize that those in developing countries are being punished for where they live, and they are paying for it with their lives. While living in East Africa, Ethiopia, I witnessed many kids suffering and dying each day, crying for mommy and daddy. After seeing these kids' tears, I decided that I could help the world. I want to stop orphans' from crying, help stop their suffering and the suffering of their mommy and daddy. If I could discover the cure for HIV, I am sure that I could wipe the world's tears with a loving smile.
