Unlike some occupations in other industry where errors or mistakes that results in incurring additional costs, errors in medical industry can be extremely serious and dire as patient's very life is at stake. Nurses in fact are in a very critical position in this context as they are actually the ones that made checks on patients for their progress as well as to also detect any slight deviation in their condition.
Apart from human qualities like being exceptional observant and intelligent, there are two attributes that nurses have to generally equipped themselves with in order to prevent themselves from erring or making mistakes.
Personal Mastery
The first and the most critical point is personal mastery. Nursing being a challenging profession sometimes are required to perform or react and decide in challenging situation where time is a limitation. For instance, prior to the doctor's arrival upon activation, nurses sometimes have to take certain measures that are deemed to be the most appropriate like applying first aid or any other relevant medical procedures. It may not as easy as it seems, as it can be stressful, as nurses would not want to make mistakes that can resulted in jeopardizing their career.
Emotional Resilience
Most people are unable to concentrate fully on their job when they are encountering personal problems due to family or financial. In such instances, nurse are more likely to make mistake resulted due to lack of concentration may be dire and serious. It is because nurses generally provide and assist patients to administer medicines and wrong medication could easily caused deterioration in conditions or in some case, death.
In order to prevent these from happening, it is imperative for the hospital or entity to come up with measures to counter these human issues. One of the most popular solution in most government agencies is to set up a psychological branch to attend to anyone in distress. As part to decentralize and increase the coverage of emotional assistance, the entity can choose to train nurses to be para-counselors as their concurrent and secondary appointment. This not only disseminate the techniques to facilitate their peers to proper help, it also prevent them from making dire mistakes because their condition is detected at the early stage.
