I love the surprise of finding out the sex of my babies... the sweet anticipation of that final moment, lying there on the ultrasound table that I hear those special words... "It's a..." I'm not sure I could spare the agony of waiting those last few months knowing full well that I could know what I was having, but didn't. As a mother of three boys, and only one little girl, I am all for finding out!
With my last pregnancy, I was certain that I was having a little girl. I wanted my daughter to have a sister. My pregnancy felt different than those of my boys, so I was sure that the baby was female. About a week before my ultrasound, I had a dream. In my dream I saw a little boy. Dark hair and big blue eyes. I knew that it was my baby, and I knew that it was a boy. It was as if he came to me to say, "Hey Mom, I'm a boy. Don't be disappointed." He came to give me a 'head's up', a warning so that I could prepare myself and not cry on the ultrasound table when I saw the tiny signs of manhood saluting the world! I did prepare myself, and sure enough, a week later, I found out I was having a boy. I think about what I would have done had I let the anticipation build for the entire pregnancy, planning and hoping for a girl only to find out when I meet the baby for the first time that all my planning was in vain?
Better to be prepared. Prepare your heart, and your baby's wardrobe and your name list. If you really, honestly aren't hoping one way or the other and you want the surprise, then more power to you. You have more willpower than me!
