While women have made advances in many parts of the world, the fact is that society favours men. This can be seen in all spheres of life. Men comprise the great majority of business executives, political leaders and judges. Also, in many parts of the world, parents prefer sons over daughters.
Most of the world's business leaders are men. Bill Gates, Carlos Slim and Warren Buffet are a few names that come to mind. With their wealth and knowledge, they have great influence in both business and politics. Undoubtedly, the business world favours men.
In the world of politics, men are also dominant. It is interesting that two women who made their mark in politics, Margaret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi, were both surrounded by men, and left in unfortunate circumstances. Margaret Thatcher was forced to resign by her party and Indira Gandhi was shot to death by her own bodyguards. The overwhelming majority of political leaders are male.
The world of law is also dominated by men. In the western world, more women are judges than was previously the case, but they still tend to be small in number. In the developing world, female judges tend to be rare.
In many parts of the world, such as in China which has a one-child policy, many parents wish to have a son over a daughter because this ensures that the family name will be carried on and a son is valued for physical labour on the farms of rural China. The tragedy, however, is that as a result, many fetuses are aborted. This highlights the extent to wish society prefers men.
Some may argue that mothers are awarded custody of children far more often than men. This may be true in the western world, but in other parts of the world it is often the father who is awarded custody. It is also true that in certain professions such as modelling women are favoured over men, but this is clearly an exception. The majority of firefighters, police officers, construction workers and bus drivers are male. In certain cases, the reason is clear. Men tend to be physically stronger than women, but why is this important in the case of driving a bus. It may simply be that it is a job that appeals more to men than to women.
Also, many women find that it becomes difficult to marry once they pass a certain age. In the case of men, however, if the are rich and famous, they seldom have difficulty attracting women. Though women have made strides towards equality, men usually earn considerably more than women do.
Professional sports are another area in which men are favoured over women. Though women's soccer has gained in popularity over the years, it is still far less popular than men's soccer. The ratings for the Men's World Cup far exceed those of the Women's. Now Wimbledon awards equal prize money to both the men and women, but the men tend to attract greater interest.
In some areas of society, it may appear that society favours women over men. This may the case in the western world with respect to custody of children and also in certain professions such as modelling. However, in most cases, this is not so. The evidence can be seen in many areas such as business, politics and professional sports. As a result, one must conclude that society gives preference to men over women.
