There are certain basic writing skills that you need to learn. You also need to learn how to revise and self-edit, since revision, rewriting, or self-editing is an essential aspect of good writing.

Since most writing is for an audience, you have to decide who your audience is.

What is the reader response to your writing? And what marketing are you writing for?

If you're writing as a hobby, then you yourself can be the principle reader.

If you're writing for a market, then you must depend upon editors and the readers of that market.

You need to submit your writings to whatever market you are writing for.

You take into consideration what editors and readers have to say. Nevertheless, you need to know as much about writing for yourself so that you are able to trust your own ideas & ideals of what is good writing. Everything else is helpful to you.

Such as when members of helium ask the question who is the best helium writer? It's helpful to read this and then read the work of the person that the helium community says is the best. This is interesting and helpful. Read that writer. What makes that writer a good writer or a great writer? Do you agree? What do you learn about writing? About reader response?

Workshops & forums also provide excellent information and resources, especially those forums that allow you to post your writings for readers.

All of this is helpful, yet each writer must decide for himself or herself the type of writing that interests, the type of writing they want to pursue, and the basic skills and techniques of their genres.
And for each genre there are different skills and techniques also.

Web content writing, for example, is a genre with its own skills and techniques very different from writing for the traditional print markets.

However, you need to write as much as possible to develop your writing skills. Writing for heliumknowledge is very good. Writing for the articles websites is very good. Also, you should try to find readers that you trust as readers for your work, whether editors, literary agents, or members of a forum. Nevertheless, again you must yourself be the arbiter of whether or not you're a good writer. You must learn as much as you can and write write write write write.
