Beef in low-fat diets

Can beef still be a part of a low fat diet? The answer is yes, as long as the consumer makes wise choices when selecting and preparing their beef.

First of all select the cuts of beef that tend to be the leanest, such as ground round or ground sirloin, top round or sirloin tip roast. If you prefer regular ground beef, choose the package of meat that is labeled extra lean, since this will contain a lower fat content than regular ground beef.

Next, preparing beef is also an important factor when it comes to a low fat diet.

If you are preparing a roast, trim the fat away first before baking, since this will further lower any unwanted fat calories.

Try to stay away from frying your beef, to avoid the extra fat calories that go along with frying. Instead, broil your hamburgers to allow excess grease to drip from the meat.

To further reduce unwanted fat calories, you may want to blot your hamburgers lightly with a paper towel, even after broiling.

To make a low fat beef stew, select the custom cut beef stew, since this cut of meat is leaner than the regular beef stew meat.

You may notice a marbling of fat within your meat cuts; the less marbling of fat, the leaner your meat will be and therefore lower in fat. This, however, tends to leave your meat less moist if it's not prepared properly. For example, if you're making a beef stew, try using the crock pot. You can add a reduced fat beef broth, along with your other ingredients, at the low setting to keep your stew meat moist. This works well cooking a roast in the crock pot too. Just remember to add more of your liquid ingredient to keep your lean beef moist.

People today, can assimilate beef in their diets if they are making healthy choices to provide low fat meals.
