How to get ready for a bicycling vacation

by Lee Gee

Getting prepared for any vacation can be a chore, but it also can be exiting, making you bubble over with anticipation. Although the most important aspect of preparation is that good preparation will ease the stress which comes at the time of embarking on your vacation and it will ensure that you've ticked all of your pre-vacation boxes ensuring nothing is forgotten and every eventuality is considered.

When your vacation is a biking trip, preparing your equipment is paramount. You don't want to find out at the start or during the vacation that you come across a problem which would've been avoidable if only you had readied yourself a little better. Take your bicycle on a trial run, ahead of the vacation, with plenty of time to rectify any problems or maintenance issues so they don't crop up actually on the vacation. You should always prepare a bicycle survival kit if you're going away with you're bicycle, including puncture repair kits, spare inner tubes and as much as you can think of that may help in any scenario regarding maintained and repair of your bicycle.

You must think about where you'll be headed, making arrangements to acquire maps of where you'll be, planning possible bike ride routes, considering terrain and distance. Even if you're using GPS then it's still advisable to have maps and a compass as a back up and also to have a record of your planned route. You should also let somebody not on the ride of your intended routes on excursions so if the worst happened and you went missing some one would be able to help point any rescue effort in the correct direction. In the planning you should also consider what food and drink you are likely to need and research what amenity's are on your route as not to be left in the wilderness with no food to regenerate that all important energy
for the bike ride back to your vacation base.

Clothing is a vital aspect of preparation for bicycling vacation as you will be largely outdoors. Consider the typical weather of your destination and even check forecasts gathering as much information as possible. Even if you think you have the weather catered for in your choices of clothing, be sure to take items just in case forecasts change. Remember a forecast is only a prediction and never 100% correct.

Here's a quick short list of plans to make:

1. Pack bicycle maintenence and repair equipment.
2. Get maps and planned routes.
3. Pack correct clothing, including a light waterproof.
4. Tell someone your plans for safety.

Being correctly prepared for you bicycling vacation will massively enhance your enjoyment and satisfaction that you get from it. It's also imperative from a safety point of view and is the responsible thing to do. Good preparation isn't difficult to achieve, but it does take commonsense and a little extra time.
