How to get ready for a bicycling vacation

Embarking on a bike tour is unlike most traditional travel holidays and quite a lot of thought has to be put into the preparations.

Just the fact that you will be exposed to the elements and the whims of Mother Nature means packing for your trip takes on a whole new dimension.

Much depends on the type of bike tour you are thinking of taking part in. Most have support vehicles, but if not, and you are venturing out on your own, then you will be responsible for having all the necessary clothing and gear loaded on your bike.

As it's not great for balance to wear a back-pack while cycling, your storage compartments will most likely be panniers attached to your wheel frames. If packed properly, they can hold lots of clothing and equipment.

Clothing-Take into account the locale you are traveling to and the weather you will most likely encounter. Think good quality and light weight. Prepare for wet weather, hot weather, and cold weather. Have several changes of clothing. Have several layers available in case of cold, wet weather and be sure to have excellent rain gear. Preferably a light-weight poncho type of rain cape(with a hood)that will prevent water from seeping through to your clothing. Be sure to always have a good supply of clean, dry socks.

Cycling gear-Bring much the same cycling clothing that you wear at home as most of it is light-weight and will most likely be your clothing of choice for most of the tour. You will just add clothing to compensate for shifts in the weather. You will need an approved helmet, sunglasses, sun-block, cycling shoes, padded cycling shorts, and tights for those cooler days.

Bike and Equipment-Be sure your bike is well tuned up before leaving on your trip. Ensure that you have several water bottle holders attached to your bike. Even if your bike is tuned up to perfection, you will need to bring along basic tools in case of mechanical problems. You will also need spare tubes, and air cartridges. Most of the tools you will need should fit in one small tool kit that is designed to fit under your bike seat. Be sure you have a bike computer mounted on the handle-bars so you can keep track of how far you are traveling each day. Be sure to have the panniers are properly mounted and try test rides with them filled with the approximate weight you will be touring with. This way you will have some practice in getting the weight balance right and in proportion.
