Cat owners thinking of purchasing pet health care insurance for their pet cats need to determine what type of pet health care policy is best suited for their needs. Is the cost of the insurance going to save you money or end up costing you for services that you won't use?
Just some things cat owners need to consider before purchasing health care insurance for their pet is the deductible amount, what the policy covers and doesn't cover such as prescription medications, the cap or limit on the insurance plan, and if you want a comprehensive health care plan or a discount insurance pet health plan.
Be sure to read the fine print and know exactly what your plan covers. If in doubt, call the insurance company and find out what's covered or not covered. The time to find out is before the insurance is needed, not after. Pet owners will also want to determine if the plan includes the cost the vet office visits or just the health issues alone.
Cats can have a lot of potential health issues during the course of their life that could result in extra veterinary visits and medications. Cats are prone to hairballs, diabetes, and urinary tract infections. Older cats are prone to more health issues, such as kidney failure. Cats who venture outdoors are also prone more prone to upper respiratory problems, with coughing and hacking, runny noses and eyes, etc. Indoor cats are less likely to have upper respiratory problems.
Some pet health care insurance plans will not cover the cost of spaying or neutering a cat. If you adopt a cat from a humane society or animal shelter, it's usually required as part of the adoption to spay or neuter the cat. If you pet health care plan doesn't cover the cost, you might consider looking for another pet health care insurance plan or purchasing a rider to your existing plan. It's important to weigh the cost of the insurance verses the cost of the spaying or neutering.
Before deciding on a particular pet health care insurance plan, contact your regular veterinarian and find out if they accept that particular health insurance. Some veterinarians don't accept pet health insurance, and some accept only certain companies. Be sure your local vet accepts the company that you wish to use before purchasing the insurance plan.
Determine your pet health care insurance needs before they are needed. Research various plans and purchase according to the needs of your pets. This can save you time, money, and needless stress later.
