I totally disagree with the statement that kissing up to the boss is the best way to get ahead. I actually saw a comedy show a few years back that insinuated that kissing up was not the move because sometimes people land kissing up to the wrong person. I have also met a lot of bosses in my personal experience that don't like feeling smothered by someone who is clearly being obvious in trying to get ahead in a company or organization. The only way to get ahead is truly hard work. Firstly, the individual must have the tools to get the job done not only when productivity is slow but also when things can get very busy and needs your complete attention. A solid educational base is your main tool. Secondly, confidence that the work can get done (and don't just talk about what you can do). If you possess the know how and the confidence to get the job done to me you have got what is needed. Eventually the boss will see you as an asset to the company and will value your input and the quality (not quantity) of your work. Don't get me wrong I have also been employed where it truly does not matter the quality of your work the boss just places a blind eye in that case it is time to move on. If you know you have the skills and you feel as if you are going nowhere then it is time to move to a company where you can see the fruit of your work. There is never a reason you should be stuck in a position where you can't move up or do better for yourself.
