Hamburgers: one of many American staples. A low-fat hamburger? Not likely. A low fat hamburger that tastes good? Impossible, you say. Well, not so. Being committed to creating healthy food that tastes good I have come up with numerous hamburger recipes. I will share with you one of my favorites. But first, some tips: 1. Always use extra lean beef. 2. Grill if possible. This way, any excess fat will drain off and the meat won't be cooking in it. 3. If you must adorn with cheese of fatty condiments, use a low or no fat version. Mixed into a flavorful burger, nobody will know the difference. 4. Use whole wheat rolls. They may not be lower in fat, but they are much better for you! Here is one of my favorite recipes for a delicious low fat burger.
Ingredients:
1 lb. extra lean (7% or less fat) ground beef
1/4 cup finely chopped chives
2 tablespoons minced red onion
1/4 tsp dried dill weed
1/4 tsp. dried parsley
Combine above ingredients with as few stirs as possible to retain the texture of the meat. Divide into 3 or 4 patties depending on desired thickness and grill or broil to desired doneness (7 minutes on my indoor grill).
When done place patties on whole wheat buns. Adorn with low fat toppings of your choice. Here is my favorite way to eat these:
Spread a very thin layer of low-fat mayonnaise on top bun and add a lettuce leaf. Place a slice of low-fat American cheese on burger and top with 2 to 3 avocado slices. Add a small amount of ketchup, put the burger together and enjoy!
