Why we need breakfast

Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day.

While we are sleeping our bodies peform vital maintenance work: healing wounds, building muscle, growing bones (if you're young), fighting illness. All this takes it's toll on your body's resources so that when you wake in the morning, your body is quite low on fuel. Breakfast will replenish your fuel deposits and provide you with the energy to see you through until lunchtime.

However, don't be fooled into thinking that skipping breakfast will help you lose weight. If you skip breakfast then, in order to provide you with energy, your body will start to break down muscle. This is not good as, although your bodyweight may go down due to the lost muscle, your bodyfat percentage will increase. The lost muscle will also leave you feeling weaker and less keen to exercise, leading you into a dangerous downward spiral.
