Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of classic cars with fuel consumption levels that are on a par with, and in many cases exceed the mpg figures of modern automobiles.
In the popular car range, one of the foremost classic cars in terms of fuel consumption is the UK's Standard eight, which returns a healthy 40/50 mpg, which is an eminently better performance that a lot of medium range of saloons on the market today. The small family Austin Mini has a similar mpg to the Standard. In a credible position on this list is the UK's Morris Minor, a small family saloon, which returns an average consumption of 35mpg.
Aligned closely to the UK, other European models such as the German Volkswagen beetle, with some owners reportedly achieving an amazing 45 miles per gallon, together with Italy's Fiat 600 which returned similar, if not slightly improved mpg results.
In the US the Ford model T was one of the most efficient models. Experts suggest that this vehicle returned 28.5 mpg, which is very much on a par with the modern SUV vehicles. Lower down on the US list of fuel efficient classic cars, though still reasonable in terms of consumption was the Chevrolet Camaro with 16-26 mpg. Even the early post war Cadillac's, with a consumption between 18-30 mpg rates reasonably well in the best gas mileage list.
Swedish manufacturers Volvo, renowned for its tank-like constructed vehicles, still managed to get its 1991 240 saloon to produce around 30 mpg, which for its day was considered fuel efficient.
No doubt there are other makes and models that produce similar results to those discussed above, but these statistics have covered some of the most popular classic car models of their day.
