Great ecotourism destinations

Are you getting itchy feet, but the usual travel destinations sound too boring? Too contrived? And too tame? Are you fed up with crowded highly-commercialized vacation spots? Then you might be the perfect candidate for today's hottest vacation destinations: Ecotourism destinations.

Ecotourism is a new way to vacation at destinations around the world; exotic destinations we could once only dream about, or read about in a National Geographic magazine. But exciting ecotourism destinations are no longer just dreams; they are realities, and they can be your reality. Here are some great ecotourism destination ideas:

* Spend a week with some of the world's few remaining Southern right whales, off the Patagonia coast of Argentina.

* Explore the alligator-filled backwaters of the disappearing Florida Everglades.

* Visit the Baima people, on the Yangtze River, who share their home with the endangered giant panda.

* Pull on your woolies and hop onboard a snowmobile, in the icy cold high Arctic, to study the migration of the Polar bear.

Ecotourism embraces four main concepts: Naturalism, conservation, local improvement, and responsibility. Travelers, tired of the heavy commercialism of the world's hot spots, can now experience a vacation devoid of fast food and tourist traps. Ecology-minded travelers can now seek out those exotic places once deemed as unreachable as the moon. While a rest is at the forefront of their minds, it is education and a concern for the environment that draws these travelers. And there is a great ecotourism destination to match every traveler's interests:

* For the very fit adventurer seeking a rugged exhilarating vacation, there is mountain-climbing in the Andes, Tibet, Thailand, Western Kenya, or Tanzania.

* The animal lover and photography buff will find a South African "Big Five" animal safari, complete with overnight camping to the night music of lion roars, an utterly euphoric experience.

* For those wishing to traverse the ends of the earth, an Antarctica black volcanic beach penguins adventure, or bird watching near Arivat in the high Arctic, may be the perfect solution.

* For those who don't mind the cold, perhaps a trip by dogteam in the high Arctic, to see pods of chubby white Beluga whales, is your true definition of a great ecotourist adventure.

* History buffs, who welcome the cloying heat and humidity of an Asian rainforest, might enjoy exploring the tiny villages and tombs hidden deep in the Vietnamese jungle.

* A biking trek through the Tortuguero
