as Jesus comes and lives a perfect life, and makes this perfect standing before God available to anyone who wants it. In a sense it would seem that the Old Testament depicted people earnestly striving to do God's will, but often failing; God being perfect demanded perfection, humanity couldn't measure up. In the New Testament God intervenes directly, both helping humanity to measure up' and giving them the perfect life of Jesus to substitute for an individuals own imperfections. A common illustration is that of a Judge looking at the accused, and saying, You have been found guilty, justice demands that you pay a fine of such and such an amount.' The accused of course can not afford this and is in a desperate position, but then the judge removes his robes, steps down and says, As your friend, I will pay the fine for you'.
So it would seem that the doctrines of the New Testament are completely linked to and build upon those of the Old. Whilst it is important for a reader to consider different types of literature when reading the Bible; and acknowledge that diverse authors have made the books they wrote distinct; there are themes and purposes running consistently throughout the whole work. Each book is clearly part of the same package seeking to convey the same message.
