Insomnia is often a symptom of mental illness, such as depression, an illness I am sadly familiar with because I suffer from it. I can tell you this: If you sometimes have a problem sleeping and find yourself awake, this may be a good time to be productive and creative. If you regularly have a problem sleeping, you have a problem, and you should seek help for it. I'm not saying you're crazy or depressed. I'm not crazy, though I do suffer from depression. I'm saying that not sleeping is hazardous to your health and mental well-being.
I do not agree that a lack of health is helpful to creativity. This is a myth. We are creative in spite of our illnesses, not because of them. I would also add that recreational drugs and large doses of caffeine are not useful either, though the creative spirit will work with whatever is available. If that's what you give it, that is, a stoned state of mind and adrenalin, that's how you will be creative. You could also take up stimulating activities that bring you in balance with yourself and expand your awareness.
Insomnia, then, is like the homeopathic remedy: A little goes a long way. A tiny bit of poison can make you well. Too much can kill you. Needless to say, but I'll say it, if you are dead, you won't be very creative, not in this world.
