If Reggie Theus could turn Anthony Anderson into a great high school basketball player, surely he can coach the Sacramento Kings to an NBA title. Right?
Much like his brief acting career, Theus will have a tough time leading the Sacramento Kings anywhere in the powerhouse that is the Western Conference. What he did at New Mexico State was great, but as many college coaches have found out, coaching in the NBA isn't quite as easy. Rick Pitino, Tim Floyd, and Mike Montgomery are just a few of the coaches in the past years to find this out. While Pitino did enjoy minimal success in the NBA, his style never quite translated to NBA ball. The results, as much as I like the guy as a coach, will unfortunately turn out the same for Mr. Theus.
The Kings are still a player or two short in competing for an playoff spot, let alone an NBA title. The Spurs, Suns, and Mavericks will all be solid again next year. There are so many teams clustered together that Theus would have to work some serious magic to even get close to an NBA title. Those aforementioned teams should be near the top of the conference for a good couple of years. Theus would have to impress and improve the Kings immensely for them to have a shot. With the short leash that many non-established NBA coaches have these days, Theus would have to put together a few playoff runs to even stick around long enough for the Kings to contend at that high of a level.
The Kings do have some of the talent in place. Mike Bibby is one of the best scoring point guards in the game. Brad Miller, when healthy, is a good solid center, and Ron Artest brings a complete all around game to the table. Theus would need to bring in another scorer and some reliable role players to improve on the Kings 33 wins last season. If it were to happen in a trade, it's possible one of those three would be shipped out.
Maybe if the Sacramento Kings played in the Eastern Conference, things might be different. That can be said about a lot of teams, though, and well, it's never gonna happen. As for now, Theus can bring a lot to the table and most likely bring the Kings back to a playoff caliber team. Or maybe in a few years he will have had enough and decide that college basketball life was for him. And hey, it's never too early to have Dick Butkus on speed dial.
